Case citation-to-URL translator

Type “what the” for a list of citation formats that the script purports to understand.

A brief explanation

Before you get all excited, this may not do what you think it does. And even if it does do what you think it does, it may do so poorly.

The script recognises a number of case citations that I’ve come across that are generally found in known places on the Internet (or, in most cases, AustLII). Give it a citation that it understands and the script produces a list of locations where the case is likely to be.

For example, say (for whatever reason) you want to look at the decision of the High Court of Australia in Dow Jones & Company Inc v Gutnick. You know (or, perhaps, learn) that the medium-neutral citation for the case is [2002] HCA 56. If you enter “[2002] HCA 56” into the input field above, the script will tell you where, on AustLII, the case can be found.

Well, it’s sometimes useful to me.

Importantly, the script does not do any searching. It will not find a case. It does not understand case names. It only understands citations, and only a subset of those.
